Alias with XP
Why is it necessary to create an alias in the Client Network Utility to be able to connect to SQL Server if you are running Windows XP?To clarify a little, it seems it is only necessary in XP. We don't have to create an alias when the client is running NT or 2000, only XP. Also, if the network connection goes down, we occasionally lose the alias and have to re-create it. Any ideas?sql
Alias not working on some machines
SQL 2005 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 SP2
SQL 2000 SP4 on Windows Server 2003 SP2, with SQL 2005 Native Client installed
Some of the servers running SQL 2000 are using a 64-bit OS, some are usiing
32-bit. All use 32-bit SQL 2000.
Trying to create an Alias on a SQL 2000 machine to point to a named instance
on a SQL 2005 machine through TCP/IP (for use in replication).
When the alias is created on those SQL 2000 servers running a 32-bit OS, it
works.
When the alias is created on those SQL 2000 servers running a 64-bit OS, it
doesn't.
Instead, when I try to test using isql, I get:
DB-Library: Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist.
Una
ble to connect: SQL Server does not exist or network access denied.
Net-Library error 53: ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tim C
There seems to be a subtle incompatibility issue. We have started moving our
SQL 2000 servers to 32-bit OS's on virtual machines to avoid the issue.
But if anyone knows of a simpler fix we could implement, I would love to
hear it.
Thanks,

findings. Aparently there's both a 32 and a 64 bit version of cliconfg.exe and these modify
different registry keys. Here's a quote from Paul most recent reply:
"The alias is working on our test machine. It turns out there is a 64 bit
version of cliconfg.exe (C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\cliconfg.exe). As soon as I
created the alias with that version, the application started working. I
removed the alias created with the 32 bit version.
Each version maintains a separate list of aliases. The registry key for the
32 bit vs. 64 bit is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo &
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo,
respectively."
So, my suggestion is that you try to create the alias with both 32 and 64 bit version of
cliconfg.exe to see which it is that is required in your particular case (probably depends on
whether the client app is 32 or 64 bit - meguess).

I have an MSDE 2000 installation on Windows 2000 Pro.
Can anyone give me any ideas why when I execute this command
RAISERROR('Test Error', 16, 1)
The corresponding severity level 16 Alert isn't fired?
Thanks

It has 3 scheduled jobs that run every night. One of the jobs performs a
DBCC DBREINDEX as one one of 6 steps. This step fails because the database
size has reached 2gb. The other 2 jobs run without problems.
However as far as the server is concered the alerts didn't happen.

Agent job owner/visibility
Windows 2000, SQL Server 2000 SP 4, Windows Authentication. We have several
developers, all in a Windows domain group, and when one developer creates an
Agent job, that job is owned by that one developer and is not visible by the
other developers. Is it possible to have a job be owned by a login that
corresponds to a Windows domain group? The Owner dropdown in EM seems to
indicate it's not possible, because no groups (domain or local) are listed.
We are not in the sqladmin group, nor in the local Windows Administrators
group.
Thanks
Vern RabeVern
Has this Windows Domain Group a login to SQL Server?
What are permissions to the login?

Yes, we have a login to SQL Server for that Windows Domain Group. I don't
believe the login is in any fixed server roles.
I may have separately found the solution, however. I have requested the DBAs
to add the login to the TargetServersRole in the msdb database. Haven't
tested yet (or even gotten their approval to do it), so we'll see.
Thanks

Hello,
After rebooting Windows 2000, SQL Server 2000 starts but
agent does not start. What might be the reason?
Thanks,
Jim,
have you checked the agent log and the Windows application log? You may find
the error message there

Verify both the SQL Agent and Windows Event viewer system logs, I feel the
problem that the problem will be
with service startup account.
Can you verify the service startup account, I suggest you to have identical
Domain Login for both SQL server and SQL Agent services.
Please retype the password and then try to start the service.

I know this may sound silly but is it a simple case of the SQLAgent service is not set to Automatic? Perhaps it is set to Manual so that you manually have to start it after the server boots up.

Again and Again SQLServer DB connection How?WHy
Hi All:
I really Shocked,These days I just really shocked what`s going happen behind
the WindowsSP2 and Windows Server 2003 (SP1)'
when I see that I can Connect to the MSSQL through Win2k and WinXP(SP1) But
I can`t connect through those.
We have a Software that install MSDE DB instance on the Windows
Server2003(WINXPSP2 too) and we can`t connect to that?even when attached my
DB to SqlEnterprise Manager, again I couldn`t connect through that?I really
swamp into details of Windows Firewall I`ve really done everything that MS
Say about opening port ,etc but nothing happen
Now the things that important for me is that What really happen to these 2
Goddamn Windows
Security happened to them. IMHO, long overdue.
What ports have you opened?

After installing reporting services Dev edition ASP does not work
I was running ThinSlicer a ASP application fine on my Windows 2000
professional workstation running SQL develeper edition. This was
running fine under IIS 5 until I installed reporting services developer
edition on the same Win 2k Professional running IIS 5 now thinslicer
does not work so is quite a few ASP applications I am not sure what
reporting services install as done to IIS that these other ASP
applications are stuffed.
I get the following error when I access Thinslicer now after installing
reporting services :
when I run
http://myworkstation/Thinslicer/Ts.asp
This was working fine before I installed reporting services not sure
what changes reporting services as done.

After Install WIN2K3 SP1 on SQL 2K SP3 Cluster Problem
My site have two HP server are install SQL 2K Cluster Server (MSCS) on
Windows 2003 Server are running smoothly but when I upgrade both Windows 2003
to SP1 the problem was appear, when I reboot Passive B cluster server it will
take over the SAN disk(the database disk) but it doesn't failover the SQL
process, I'm sure I didn't set failback to passive server.
When I manual to failover from Active A Cluster to passive B server, it can
success to failover to B, then I restart A Cluster server, it can takeover
all process and SAN disk back, I'm also sure I didn't set failback to A
Server.
So, could you mind give me some hints for me to trouble shooting, I hear
before most of the cases are cause of Windows 2003 SP1.
Make sure that you HBA's are certified to run under SP1, this is not always
the case. You may need to update the drivers after SP1. Worse case,
uninstall SP1 until the vendor supports SP1.
Cheers,
Rod

After changing the comupter's name
I installed SQL Server 2005 in a windows xp machine. The ogrinal name of the machine is pc1.
After installing SqlServer 2005, I change the machine name to pc2.
After installing SqlServer 2005, I change the machine name to pc2.
I find that many login names in the Manager Studio is still prefixed with pc1, like pc1/ASPNET.
Must I change the prefix to pc2 manually?Yes, you will need to update the login names.
I discussed this issue and a possible solution on my blog at:
http://blogs.msdn.com/lcris/archive/2005/09/27/474505.aspx
Let me know if you need additional help.
Thanks

AES (128 bit block) : Can I use it?
If I've got a 64-bit OS such as Windows XP Professional x64 Edition running and I have the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, is AES permittable or does TRIPLEDES still need to be used?
SQL Server 2005 does not support AES encryption on Windows XP. You can visit http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345262.aspx for more details.

Advise on hardware upgrade
I would like to have your opinions on how to upgrade the server hardware
here:
Currently:
Windows 2000 Server SP2
Dual Intel Pentium III 1,2 GHz
2 GB RAM
Harddisks are on a SAN, so they are not needed to upgrade
MS-SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, no other apps run on this machine
The SQL Server hosts a single database, size approx 3 GB, growing by about
10% per month. 60 highly concurrent users, in fact doing the same things at
the same time. The largest table has about 9.000.000 records, daily
increment 9000.
When the users start their tasks, I encounter - due to the intense
concurrency - performance degradation, although the overall performance is
ok. These peaks are beyond the servers capabilities. I monitored using the
performance monitor:
Processor Queue lenght: average 0,58 max 15
% Processor Time Processor 0 average 15,5 max 41,9 (but I have seen peaks up
to 90% as well)
% Processor Time Processor 1 average 19,5 max 61,1
% Privileged Time Processor 0 average 1,5 max 7,1
% Privileged Time Processor 1 average 1,3 max 5,7
I would recommend upgrading to a 4 processor system with Pentium 4 3,2 GHz
What´s your opinion?
Thanks for your input.
BerndStrange that nobody seems to have an opninion on this topic. Is there a
reason why?
TIA
