Alerts, Thresholds

Hi All,

Actually i m new in sql server administration. And i m in the process of building our production box with sql server 2005. ( win 2003 std )

Can anybody plz tell me , what all the "Alerts" and their 'Thresholds' i have to configure on my server, so that those can be emailed (or) paged.

And does anybody know like any link, which gives step by step instruction for configuring Database mail with explanations.

that highly depends on what other monitoring software you are using and which areas this already covers. But I would go for disk usage and datafile / logfile growth and size. If you experiencing other problems, you might also want to trace / log other parameters, but this depends upon your requirements. Database mail is explained in detail at the MSDN sites:

Agent started but not started?

I have a SQL 2005 server running on a win2k3 box. For some reason, no
matter what account the SQL Server Agent runs under, error messages
are logged in the security logs. Even if the login account is set to
"local service". BUT if I look at the service under "services", it
says started. It also says started in the SQL 2005 configuration
manager.
Has anyone seen this before?

Can you create one test job and try executing. If the job runs then SQL
Agent is working fine...also see the SQLAgent.out file in Log folder of SQL
Server
installation folder for any errors

After Intallation

I have a box with SQL Server DataServices with W2K3 SP2 & SQL2005 SP2, then
I have a box with W2K3 with SP2 where I have Reporting Services, at the
configuration page, everything is green and all services started,
initialized and I get this error from:
http://<server>/reports
"Unable to connect to the remote server"
Any Ideas?

Have you made sure that IIS is running on your Reporting Services box?
It's turned off by default in Win2003.

To know the issue better, please let me know the following:
1. Can you access http://<server>/reportserver properly?
2. Please check if the following ls listed properly in
RSWebApplication.config. If you have SSL enabled for the report server,
please make sure the following is listed
<UrlRoot>https://<server>/ReportServer</UrlRoot>
<ReportServerUrl>https://<server>/ReportServe</ReportServerUrl>
RSWebApplication.config is under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Reporting
Services\ReportManager
In addition, this issue could occur if some Antivirus program is installed.
You may want to check if the issue occurs if they are disabled on your
server.

I don't have SSL on the website, don't have antivirus on the server.

From the result, it seems the issue only occurs on report manager. Going
forward, please let me know what's the configuration of <UrlRoot> and
<ReportServerUrl> in the file RSWebApplication.config. Please make sure the
server name is correct, and you may want to use the FQDN such as
server.domain.com if it's a memeber server of a domain.
If the issue persists, please collect the ReportServerWebApp log under the
following folder and let's know the detailed error information:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\LogFiles
If you have other related information, please feel free to let's know.

Also, please check the appliation pool of report manager by running
"inetmgr", and make sure the user of appliation pool has the full
permission of reporting service physical folder.

to check if it has the following lines:
<ReportServerUrl>http://servername/ReportServer</ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
Also, please change the <UrlRoot>machine name/reportserver</<UrlRoot> to
<UrlRoot>FQDN/reportserver</<UrlRoot> in RSReportServer.config file.
You may want to restart IIS by running "iisrest" to take effect.

I still can't figure it out. If I fill the <ReportServerUrl> (which is
blank by default in my environment) I get the following error message:
"The configuration file contains an element that is not valid. The
ReportServerUrl element is not a configuration file element."
I do not have SSL. Does anyone have an idea? Still stuck on this
issue... :-(

After Install sql 2005 by default

Is sql2005 sercurity logins and password case-sensitive? I installed by
default nothing special and no select any case sensitive box.
ThanksIf the collation selected during installation is the default
Latin1_General_CI_AS (Case insensitive, Accent Sensitive), the login name
should be case insensitive, but the password will be always sensitive.

How do I use IO/affinity to ensure that all SQL Server related I/O goes to
the first CPU? I'm aware that sp_configure is the command to be used.
But how do I exactly specify that the first CPU is to be exclusively used
for SQLServer I/O? Can someone give me an example OR point me to an page tha

Recall reading on a web site that the setting was to be done using a bitmap
mask, where each bit specified the CPU number. Is this correct? And if it is
- how do I go about using this option? Just curious.

of the conversion needed for bitmasks and decimal values. The only tricky
thing to remember is that the processors are zero-indexed ie the first
processor is number 0 and the second is number 1 etc.

the first CPU? I'm aware that sp_configure is the command to be used.
But how do I exactly specify that the first CPU is to be exclusively used
for SQLServer I/O? Can someone give me an example OR point me to an page that
